We finally left Nanchang for Guangzhou. Sophie had her first flight of one hour. It was sort of a trial run for the trans-pacific flight coming up. While she had no problem with take-off or climbing altitude, or turbulence, she did test our diaper-changing abilities about 20 minutes into the flight. Luckily, Mary and I had an open seat between us and Mary was able to spirit away the evidence (if not the smell!) away to the airplane bathroom.
While our traveling partners were being chided by a Chinese mother for not feeding their baby enough, Sophie, of course, drew a different audience. One lady on the plane even tried to take her away from Mary, and I had to take her in order to turn the woman away.
We got checked-in to the famous White Swan Hotel about 1:30 p.m. While we ordered room service, Sophie stood on the ledge of our window with my help, and addresses her subjects with a two-handed wave, much as the Pope does from his balcony!
As usual, Sophie created quite a stir when we went to eat in the hotel restaurant for dinner, even though seemingly every other table in the restaurant had an adopted Chinese girl.
We went shopping very quickly in the evening in several nearby shops. Of course, we had to purchase five more traditional Chinese outfits -- some dresses & some jackets and pants. We did purchase one in solid white which we think will be a very beautiful and unique christening gown.
Sophie's one tooth is growing quickly and apparently was hurting her quite a bit. We had about an hour-long meltdown during bedtime that, judging by the vocal range and pipes displayed, proves she will have a wonderful career as an opera singer.
