The best part of today? Awakening to a little soft hand gently patting me on the cheek. I opened my eyes, and there was Phoebe Li smiling at me from her crib.
Up until today, I've been awake first staring into the crib waiting for her to wake up. So today she beat me to it wishing me a Happy Easter! So sweet...
We packed it up again and visited Chen's Ancestral Hall built during the Qing Dynasty (1888-1894), a complex of 19 buildings and courtyards...it's considered the largest and best-preserved traditional building in Guangdong province.
We bought a water color scroll painting for Phoebe Li and the calligrapher painted her Chinese name on it...very beautiful.
Afterward we stopped at the wholesale pearl market...5 floors of pearls and other jewelry...overwhelming for Dan and I as we are not mall shoppers. But I do know some of you at home would have gone crazy in there! You choose your favorite string of pearls, white, black, pink, and they make a necklace, bracelet, whatever for you right away while you wait. We later tried roasted chestnuts from a street vendor...yummy!
Tonight we went out with the other families for Thai food around the corner from our hotel. They are doing masonry on every sidewalk at all hours of the day and night here preparing the city for the Asia Games in November. Men and women are out there mixing cement, pushing wheelbarrows, and putting down cobblestones so it's tricky maneuvering a stroller around here (though Phoebe Li prefers to be carried most of the time!).
Our guides Grace and Kelly have us on the go all the time. The pace has been very busy...it goes to show you can go anywhere with a baby! Though doing it with 12 American families with Chinese babies in China gets a few stares.
Phoebe Li is doing so well, and has more fun and giggles more every day. She's busy busy all the time...crawl, stand, fall, giggle, repeat. Today's game...she holds my hands, then squats down, and jumps up and laughs. She also likes to wave to herself in any mirror she sees, especially in the elevator. She's just a love.
Sending our love from Guangzhou,
Jackie, Dan, and Phoebe Li
