November 18, 2005 Day 11 in China
Guangzhou, China
GUANGZHOU,CHINA -- We received Lily's Chinese passport yesterday morning and soon thereafter we boarded a plane for Guangzhou and arrived early evening, Nov. 17. It was a site for sore eyes. Nanchang was cold and gray. Guangzhou must be China's equivalent of Savannah and New Orleans before the flood. We're on the water and the skies are blue. All is right with the world!
We are staying at the lovely White Swan Hotel on Shamian Island. Our room overlooks the Pearl River and the lights of the city. It is five stars at their absolute best. There's actually a waterfall inside the hotel, which is pretty incredible. We really feel like we are on vacation now!
I bought a stroller for the baby today and strolled through several shops this afternoon, buying traditional Chinese dresses for her and, of course, squeaky shoes. The deals you can find on shoes, clothing, pearls, etc. are just unbelievable. I plan to buy an extra suitcase for the trip home. Tomorrow we will make a trip to the pearl and jade market here in Guangzhou.
Roy's also in heaven here. He had his first cigar in several weeks. A Monte Cristo #4, he says, and it was wonderful (so he says!),
Today, we had Lily's medical exam. Other than a runny nose, she passed with flying colors. She weighs 15.5 pounds. The nine month clothing is still too big at this point, but she'll get there eventually.
Love to all our friends and family.
